SSDI GUIDE

SSDI Income Limits for 2026

SSDI does not use a general household-income or asset test like SSI. However, work activity and earnings can affect eligibility because Social Security evaluates whether a person is performing substantial gainful activity.

2026 SGA amounts

For 2026, SSA lists monthly substantial gainful activity at $1,690 for non-blind individuals and $2,830 for statutorily blind individuals. These amounts normally change annually.

Gross earnings are only the starting point

SSA may consider countable earnings rather than simply the amount on a paycheck. Impairment-related work expenses, subsidies, unsuccessful work attempts, and special conditions may matter.

Self-employment is different

For self-employed people, SSA may evaluate the value of services, hours, duties, and comparison with unimpaired workers—not just net profit.

Assets generally do not disqualify SSDI

SSDI is based on insured status and disability. Savings, a home, or other assets do not usually create an SSDI resource limit. SSI has separate income and resource rules.

After benefits begin

Work incentives such as the trial work period and extended period of eligibility can permit work attempts under specific rules. Earnings should always be reported promptly.

Check Eligibility

Frequently asked questions

Is the SGA amount the same as the trial work amount?

No. They serve different purposes. In 2026, the trial work service-month amount is $1,210, while non-blind SGA is $1,690.

Does a spouse’s income affect SSDI?

A spouse’s income generally does not determine SSDI eligibility on your own work record, though it may affect SSI or other programs.

Are investment earnings treated like wages?

SSDI work rules focus primarily on earned income and work activity. Other income can matter for taxes or other benefit programs.
